Fred Thompson To Form Committee to Run for President

Filed under: Conservatives,Culture,Election '08,Politics,Primaries,Republican — avoiceofreason @ 2:43 pm

Just released on Fox News in an interview with a columnist for Politico.com.  Here’s the full article.

Sen. Thompson is forming a committee to run for President of the United States.

This could make the GOP race very interesting.

He will be announcing this soon. We’ll be following this up.

Some may say it is a bit late to enter the race, but the recent slump of Giuliani, and the inability of McCain to close the gap, while Mitt Romney flounders about 8% would give Thompson reason to run.  He has high positive ratings among the base, and a very large recognizability factor.

  1. I hope he jumps in the ring. Not only charismatic, but consistent in his voting record.

  2. I read a rumor that he’ll announce on May 1 when his contract with Law & Order is up.

  3. That was repeated today on the news.

  4. Fred is definitely I would vote for – he certainly doesn’t seem to have the baggage of all of the other candidates (both Republican & Democrat).

  7. Any idea where we can find information on where he stands? What little I’ve seen, I like. And I certainly like his character on L&O. (of course that doesn’t mean much, I liked Sonny Bono’s character on TV too)

  8. Ahh, Randy, I feel like the source of all the information.

Here’s a link to a previous post which has his stated/voted positions.

  9. Thanks for the information. It gives a good overview of his ideas. The real question is what would he do if another 9/11-type event came up? Something no one expected.

(See my blog http://newfromclt.blogspot.com/2007/04/bush-success-vs-al-qaeda-breeds-long.html) for a similar thought line.

No one expected 9/11 when they went into the voting booth in 2000. I believe there has been a 9/11 type event in every presidency. Maybe not an attack on the US, but something that no one expected. So, when we vote in 2008, we need to be ready for the next unknown thing. We need to elect the man (or woman) who can handle it and respond the way we would want them to respond.

Thompson may be that man. I’m going to watch him very carefully…

  10. This is good news, it should be very interesting to see how this plays out.The first New Hampshire poll came out that had his name on it, he got 10%. And that’s without campaigning

  11. I still have a feeling that running a more moderate GOP candidate is a much better idea. The GOP can’t throw away a shot at large states in the Northeast and Rustbelt and do well nationally. Find someone who is Conservative enough, tough on security, but able to give a little to the center. I don’t know if Mr. Thompson, with the idea of carrying the Conservative torch would be a winner in ’08.
