RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina’s top prosecutor dropped all charges Wednesday against the three former Duke lacrosse players accused of sexually assaulting a stripper at a party, saying the athletes were innocent victims of a “tragic rush to accuse” by an overreaching district attorney.
This case has been one of the worst examples of overzealous prosecution, and the words of the accused player Reed Seligman said it the best, stating how that if it hadn’t been for his parent’s resources he would have been in jail for the rest of his life. What of those who are victims of the same type of overzealous prosecution.
The North Carolina Attorney General had this to say,
“I think a lot of people owe a lot of apologies to a lot of people,”
The first one who needs to pony up is the District Attorney, Niphong, who used this story to score political points, in spite of an enormous amount of exculpatory evidence which was malicioiusly withheld. He should be in the hot seat, and hopefully his immunity to prosecution, which can be waived if it is found that he acted on his own interests, rather than the state’s interest.
