Well, the fur is flying in the political world. Democrat political contenders are taking aim at Rudy Giuliani for an alleged comment, a la VP Dick Cheney, that if a Democratic nominee is elected to the Oval Office in 2008 it would usher in another 9/11.
This came about from a report made by The Politico, which read,
Rudy Giuliani said if a Democrat is elected president in 2008, America will be at risk for another terrorist attack on the scale of Sept. 11, 2001.
Democratic contenders reaction was quick:
John Edwards said Giuliani’s comments were “divisive and plain wrong.” And Hillary Clinton called it “political rhetoric” that would not lessen the threat of terrorism. Barak Obama said, “Rudy Giuliani today has taken the politics of fear to a new low and I believe Americans are ready to reject those kind of politics.” There is possibly a slight problem to this story.
According to Brit Hume’s political grapevine the former NYC Mayor never said the alleged remark, and all he has been saying is what he’s said before about the dangers of leaving an offensive footing and going back to a defensive framework, as was the case prior to 9/11. From the article in The Politico column it reasds:
“If any Republican is elected president —- and I think obviously I would be the best at this —- we will remain on offense and will anticipate what [the terrorists] will do and try to stop them before they do it.”
This is something that Guiliani has said frequently, along with other snippets from the speech, which included familiar themes.
“But the question is how long will it take and how many casualties will we have?” Giuliani said. “If we are on defense [with a Democratic president], we will have more losses and it will go on longer.”
“I listen a little to the Democrats and if one of them gets elected, we are going on defense,” Giuliani continued. “We will wave the white flag on Iraq. We will cut back on the Patriot Act, electronic surveillance, interrogation and we will be back to our pre-Sept. 11 attitude of defense.”
He added: “The Democrats do not understand the full nature and scope of the terrorist war against us.”
Again, these have been familiar themes found in the stump speech of Mr. Giuliani.
Perhaps the Democratic Candidates need to do their homework, and actually read what is said. What did Hamlet’s mother say, “Methinks the lady doth protest too much”.
